Our History

Not long after the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, Woodmere was organized by a group of Detroit businessmen in 1867. The Cemetery features a beautiful landscape originally designed by world-renowned landscape architect Adolf Strauch.  At almost 150 years old, the vast array of structures, statuary and monuments have shown to stand the test of time. 

Memorialized here forever are the area's most notable citizens, with several of these key figures listed below.  The cemetery also houses the remains of Civil War and World War II soldiers within its borders. Also interred at Woodmere was James Vernor, Detroit-based pharmacist and founder of the oldest existing ginger ale brand, Vernors. Vernors have been known to help cure stomachaches for over 150 years.

The cemetery, located just a few minutes from the Dearborn Ford Plant, has stood witness to flourishing times, experienced due to the success of the auto industry, at the turn of the 20th century. Woodmere is home to the remains of auto greats like the founders of Cadillac, Lincoln and Buick.   

The cemetery has also seen the worst of times. Later, during the Great Depression, Woodmere received the bodies of the 4 young men who perished of their injuries suffered during the fateful 1932 Hunger March. The March had passed the cemetery on its route from Detroit to Dearborn and was a major catapult in the unionization of the auto industry nationwide.
